LED stands for light emitting diode.
These are very small semiconductors that emit light when a current is passed through it. In the past few years, specialised therapeutic LEDs that have extra luminescence emitted through a very specific wavelength band, have been used for the purpose of skin rejuvenation.
LED phototherapy is non-invasive and non- thermal, and hence requires no recovery time after treatments.
Different wavelengths of LED can be used to target various skin conditions from acne to ageing skin. Each wavelength will penetrate a different depth and cause a different effect within the skin.
LED Phototherapy is based on the principle that living cells are able to absorb and are influenced by light. The treatment involves exposing the skin to low levels of beneficial light energy from the visible and infrared part of the light spectrum which energise cellular functions to stimulate various cellular processes with therapeutic effects. It is a natural response similar to that of plant photo-synthesis through a process known as photobiomodulation.
What is LED phototherapy used for?
The skin is the largest organ in the body and is also the largest receptor of light. Skin has the amazing ability to absorb light and transform it into energy that can stimulate healing through cellular regeneration – the ability to replace old, damaged skin cells with new, healthy ones. This is why treatments utilizing LED (Light Emitting Diodes), can achieve optimal results via a coloured-light energising facial.

LED phototherapy is used for a multitude of skin conditions.
LED Phototherapy has long been known for its regenerating and anti-inflammatory properties. Research demonstrates that it increases collagen production, destroys acne causing bacteria, reduces inflammation, improves skin tone, texture and clarity and eases muscular and joint pain. Unlike more invasive procedures that work as a result of the body’s response to trauma, LED Phototherapy is a safe and a year round treatment option for all skin types without discomfort or downtime.
Successful treatment with LED Phototherapy is determined by delivering clinically proven wavelengths at an optimised intensity and dose to maximise the light/chromophore interaction that allow for these specific cellular reactions to take place.
RED LIGHT (630nm)- Is used for skin rejuvenation, to reduce inflammation, and to improve healing, for example post-laser or derma pen treatments.
It is clinically proven to increase the body’s natural form of cellular energy (ATP) which in turn “kick starts” cells to regenerate faster. Red light is potently absorbed by fibroblasts increasing the synthesis of collagen and elastin for smoother firmer skin. It also stimulates blood circulation and lymphatic systems to eliminate toxins and accelerate healing. The visible effects post treatment are in most cases immediate; skin feels hydrated and plump and radiance is restored.

BLUE LIGHT (415nm)- Is used for acne treatment and antibacterial purposes. Blue 415nm has powerful antibacterial properties and offers effective treatment for all grades of acne without irritation. Exposure to blue light at 415nm interacts with the p.acnes bacteria creating a photodynamic reaction which results in bacterial destruction. It also helps to reduce sebum production and improve skin clarity. Applied in combination with Red and Near Infrared light, the Tri-Wave treatment is excellent as a post treatment procedure to guard against infection, reduce inflammation and accelerate healing.

For the treatment of acne, clinical trials have shown that a treatment twice a week for 8 weeks, followed by once a week for 4 weeks helps to reduce bacteria counts and inflammation associated with acne, and therefore reduce the number of active acne lesions.
The red light and blue light LEDs should be alternated each session.
When red LED light is used for facial rejuvenation, treatments can be done from 1 to 4 weeks apart, and the more treatments that are performed, the better the result. This can be incorporated into one’s skin maintenance regime.
